Class summary 11.14.2010

6 of 10 things from the book:

Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status:
Don't believe the hype that life will be happier with a certain purchase.
Use what you buy and throw it out when it's worn out.
Leave room for extravagance using our resources wisely does not mean never splurging.

Tip about baby names

One of the resources that Jennifer and I found tremendously helpful when we were picking out baby names was the Social Security website where you can go to find the most popular baby names every year for the past 150+ years. We wanted to find names that actually sounded like names, but that weren't very popular anymore, so we looked at what was popular in the 1920's and found some real gems!

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

Just a tip!

Greg

Class summary 11.7.2010

Two competing things:

1. We are made in God's image.
2. We live in a world of materialism

Solomon had experienced a lot of things and said that it was all meaningless.

The conclusion of the matter: "fear god and keep his commands"

What is your most treasured possession?

Husband and wife might not have the same priorities even though they value the same things. Thats okay, though.

What do we want out of life?
Kids to accept Christ
Quality time with family
Full life in the center of God's will

Is this world really geared toward providing the things that we want out of life?

We want all of those things. Sometimes we get so busy trying to get those hinge that we start going in the wrong direction.

Eccles. 1:2-11. Meaningless says the teacher. Utter meaningless. Everything is meaningless what does man gain from all his labor at which he toiled. Generations come and go, but the earth remains. The sun rises and the sun sets. The wind blows to the south and turns, but always returns. All streams flow into the sea, but it's never full. All things are wearisome. The eye never has enough of seeing. Theres nothing new under the sun.

Genesis 1:27. So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him.

Because of that we are able to have a desire and understanding for eternal things. That Will help us get off of the treadmill of materialism.

Fwd: Operation Jon

> As I am typing this email I am overwhelmed with tears of joy. I want to thank each and everyone of you for your love, support and prayers. We are now home from the hospital and Jon is doing well. His surgery went extremely well. It was over in 45 minutes and the doctor was able to do it all with the scope. He said things looked better than they thought initially and he changed his recovery time to 8-12 weeks versus 12-15. That is a huge praise!!!! Please just pray for him now as he begins the recovery process. He will start therapy tomorrow and have to go three times a week. This is the painful part so pray he will handle it well. Thanks again for all of your prayers. They were definitely felt this morning at the hospital. I will keep you posted on his recovery.

Fwd: Urgent Prayer Request

From Amber and Jon:
We went to see the orthopedic surgeon this morning about Jon's shoulder.  He is having surgery on October 21st, two weeks from Thursday.  The doctor is 70% sure he can do the surgery arthroscopically which is a faster recovery.  He will not know for sure until he gets in there to see how bad it really is.  Please pray that he will be able to do the surgery that way because he will have a faster recovery.  Pray too that Jon can keep from damaging it even more the next two weeks.  He will have to wear a brace with no movement for 3-4 weeks with a total recovery time of 12-14 weeks.  He will have to have extensive therapy and it wll begin the day after surgery.  So by January 20th he should be back to using his arm completely.  This is his left shoulder and he is left hand so he will have to miss one possibly two weeks of work.  Please pray too that we will all stay healthy over the next two weeks.  If he gets sick, they will have to postpone surgery and as you know we are on a time line with baby due in March.  Thanks for all the emails and kind words and a BIG thank you for all your prayers.  Have a great week and we will see you on Sunday.

Fwd: Urgent Prayer Request

Most of you know that Jon has been having trouble with his left shoulder. We saw the orthopedic surgeon two weeks ago and his initial diagnosis was two cortisone shots and rest. He told us if it continued to bother him to get an MRI. We went to have the MRI this morning where I use to work and our radiologist was able to speak with us after the scan. Jon has two tears in the tendons in his shoulder. One is completely torn and the other is partially torn. He also has calcium build up as well as spurs on the bone from his previous 4 wheeling injury. After speaking with the radiologist and our friend who is a physical therapist, it is almost certain that he will have to have surgery. This will be a very painful surgery as well as a very long recovery. They will have to repair the tendons and restore the bone. He is looking at three months of therapy and recovery. As you know in the next 5 months we will be having our second child. This leaves us very little time to operate and heal before the baby comes. We follow up with the surgeon tomorrow morning at 10:30am. Please pray that Jon will be able to have the surgery soon if needed. Also, keep us in your prayers because this will be hard on not only him but the whole family. We feel so blessed to have a great group of people for prayer warriors and in times like these we truly appreciate your prayers.
I mentioned yesterday that my grandfather had a rough week last week. He found a cancer on his lip that will be removed Thursday but he also fell from a tree stand in the deer woods. I spoke with my grandmother yesterday and they were in the emergency room. He was in a lot of pain from the fall and not able to sleep. They sent him to Little Rock today and found out he has a cracked vertebrae in his neck, cracked ribs and several deep bruises from the fall. He will have to wear a neck brace and a brace for his ribs for the next 8 to 12 weeks depending on how he heals. Please pray for him and my grandmother as they deal with this situation. He is 87 years old so healing quickly is not really an option. Their names are Robert & Kathleen Miller.
Thanks again for your prayers I apologize for the long email. I will email everyone tomorrow to let you know what the doctor says. Have a great week and we will see you on Sunday!

Revival website

Don't forget to go to awakeningbirmingham.com for details on this exciting upcoming event!

Thought for the day: 10.3.2010

God created us to be dependent people.

Genesis 2:18 - It is not good for man to be alone.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 - two are better than one. If one falls down, his friend can help him up.

Prov 27:17 - as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Acts 2:42 - early church devoted themselves to fellowship (among other things).

1 Thess 5:11-12 - encourage one another, build each other love. Live in peace and be patient with one another.

Eph 4:16 - God gave us roles to play in the building up of God's kingdom.

Kelly had to go and let parent's dogs out. She said, "I never covet solitude."

God uses our differences for his glory.

Psalm 125 on 9.26.2010

Topic: Insecurity

Psalm 125: Those who trust in the lord are like Mt. Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people forevermore.

Could these things be driven by insecurity?
Manipulator
Promiscuity
Jealousy
Fear
Unbelief
Anger
Cynicism
Criticism

Psalm 30
David wrote it when he had been sick.
I will exalted you, oh Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths. I called to you for help and you helped me. You brought me up from the grave. You spared me from going down to the pit. Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

V6. When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken." When you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm, but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.

Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them and delivers them from all of their troubles. The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

-----

Whether we are uncertain or joyful, God will bring us back and restore us if we put our trust in him.

Deleted These by accident

Dailey Class Pics

The class holding really, really still

Class summary 9.19.2010

Review:
Psalm 120: about being far away from home.
Psalm 121: praise that help comes from God as they travel on the way to Jerusalem
Psalm 122: rejoicing about being at the temple
Psalm 123: gods sovereignty

Psalm 124:
God is for us:
Things that can swallow us alive: stress, worry, physical health, parenting, loss of loved ones, war between nations, loss of jobs, trouble in the Ives of our children, little insignificant things taking up all the time.
"Even though well say things and sing things to the contrary, we might live our lives as if we believe in our hearts that God at best tolerates us and how lucky we are for that. We are convinced that god created man with high hopes, but had them dashed and now he tolerates us because he's stuck with us."
Jesus hung on the cross for us even though he knew all of our days.
Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers of wickedness.
Provides perspective in our struggles. It's not a battle against the creditors or the employees or bosses or children, but against spiritual powers of evil. The devil uses every hard time to break into our lives and pull of from God.
Eph 1:4 just as he chose us to be holy and blameless before him in love.
Do these words apply to us? They do, but. It's hard to think about that since we have so many flaws. We are righteous because he made us so.
Psalm 124: if the lord has not been on our side, when men attacked us, they would have swallowed us alive. The flood would have engulfed us. The waters would have swept us way. Praise the lord who has not let us be torn by their teeth. The snare has been broken and we have escaped.
Amen. Thanks Joey!

Prayer Requests for August 22nd

This weeks lesson was titled Landmine of Fear. The lesson comes from the book of Nehemiah chapters 1 - 4. Joey started off the lesson by asking the class "What are you afraid of?" The class responded by saying loosing things that are important to us such as family members, jobs, etc. Parenting and making the right decisions in child rearing. Being accepted. Alot of the kids in our class started kindergarten this year and as parents you worry that they will make friends and fit in. Letting go of your plans and following God's plans. Uncertainty of what the future holds. Then Joey went on to explain what fear does to us. First of all, it divides our mind and distracts us from what we are suppose to be doing. Second of all it causes us to procrastinate or not follow through due to fear. Last but not least it unminds our self-confidence. In our lesson we learned that Nehemiah put his strength in God to restore the wall & the city. God uses time of fear & anxiousness to draw us closer to Him. Even when the city was restored and the trials were complete, Nehemiah was able to stay close to God and follow His plan. As you go this week think about the fear in your life? Are you letting it hold you back from the things you feel God leading you to do? Try and turn your fear over to God and focus on His will in your life.

Prayer Requests:

Prayer Requests for August 8th

Our lesson this week Comes from Genesis 37. We learned about Jealousy. Joey asked us, what ways we see jealousy in our lives. The class responded with at work and trying to advance; with children competing for mom and dad's attention; animals adjusting to new babies in the house; time; keeping up with the Jones'; time management. Our lesson is about Joseph and his brothers. Joseph's father always favored him over his brothers so a lot of jealousy began to grow between the brothers and Joseph's relationship with his father. Kelly mentioned that Joseph was a catalyst to their jealousy. He rubbed things in their face and made a point to comment on his father's love for him. So what are some signs of jealousy that we need to look for? First is comparison. Joseph's brothers were comparing the attention Joseph was getting from their father to the attention they were getting. Next is competition. The brothers began to compete with Joseph for their father's attention. Next is fear or insecurity. The brothers were insecure in their own relationships so they became fearful of Joseph. The last is strife and descention. Because of the way the brothers were feeling, they chose to cause tension and distress among the family. As believers, we all have highs and lows in life but at different times. One believer may be having a great high in their life while their friend may be having an extreme low. The devil uses jealousy to get us to take our eyes off God and onto the circumstances we are facing in life. As you go this week, really focus on your life and whether your eyes are focused on God or on the life things that bring you down. Pray that God will help you keep focused on the eternal aspects of life with Him verses the low aspects of life on earth.

Prayer Requests for August 1st

Like I said this morning, I apologize for not posting the prayer request last week. The days just got away from me. I am back on track and posting on time this week. Our lesson this week comes from the book 1 Samuel, chapter 19, verses 1 - 22. The first part of our lesson is about disappointment. Joey posed the question to our class, "What are some disappointments in life that believers face?" The class answered: Loosing a job or having a bad job situation; Family members can be disappointing and the way they treat us; Expectations we set for ourselves can some times be disappointing if not reached. Another way to look at disappointment is that it can build character in Christians. It is more about how we respond and handle the disappointment then the actual event that becomes the disappointment. The next part of our lesson was about Pride. Joey threw out some examples of what could be prideful situations. For example, always winning or having to be first; being self centered; trying to set goals for yourself to complete; giving to charity and so on. After looking at these situations we realized it is not the situation that can be prideful, but the intentions behind the goals. We also learned that pride can be the most dangerous sin because it takes focus off God and onto ourselves. The question for the week is are you using your disappointments as a learning experience to build character? Or are your intentions God centered or Me centered? As you go this week try and put God first and while going through disappointments try and see what lesson God is bringing you.

Prayer Request for July 18th

Our lesson this week comes from 1 Kings 21: 1-29. We were challenged to think about things that we may have waited patiently for but struggled while doing so. We were also challenged to think about situations that are hard to understand. For instance, why does a 16 year old get pregnant when a couple who is married has been trying for years. Or why God allows three year old to get cancer, or 911, or Katrina. Where is God in all of this? Several in the class mentioned that we may not see how God has worked in a tragedy, but it is there. For instance, after 911 church attendance was on a rise as well as people becoming Christians. Although, this was a tragedy and took so many lives, there were thousands of lives saved eternally by their commitment to God. As for the three year old with cancer, the child's family members may not be saved and their purpose on this earth was to bring them closer to God. In our story today, Ahab asks Naboth if he can purchase his land. After Naboth denies him the land he goes on to pout about his loss. Then Jezebel comes to see him and he shares his woes with her. Jezebel decides to plot a scheme to get the land for Ahab. She has Naboth and all of his heirs killed so Ahab can have the land. Ahab goes on to be with Jezebel and live on the land. It appears that Ahab and Jezebel had gotten away with murder. Where is God? Does He not know or care? Why did He not protect Naboth a man of God who was doing what is right? God three years later send Elijah to assure Ahab he too will have his blood licked by dogs. Ahab and Jezebel were both killed and their blood licked by dogs. What we need to take away from this is God is in control. He has an ultimate plan for each of us. Although it is easier said than done, we are to be patient and wait on God. As you go this week ask God to give you patience as you wait for His will. Try and focus your attention on how God is working in your life and not when.

Prayer Request for July 11th

Our lesson this week is about Elisha and Elijah. Our lesson comes from 1 Kings19:19-21. Elisha receives the call from God. After God summoned him, he was happy to go. He also fully committed to God's calling. As Christians we seek God's will everyday. The thing we may not realize is the everyday tasks that become so mundane for us may actually be God's will for our lives. For example, God's will for a student is to study and pass their classes. God's will for a doctor is to take care of his patients by making rounds and so on. God's will for a teacher is to do their lesson plans and come to work prepared to teach. The question you need to ask yourself this week while you are working on the computer, doing laundry, building homes, fighting a case in court and taking care of children is do you truly appreciate and out your all into God's will for you life right now? Or are you so busy seeking God's will that you do not realize your mundane tasks may be His will. Appreciate the everyday things of life and next time you are washing those dishes, thank God for the ability to follow His will.

Prayer Requests for June 20th

Our lesson this week is continuing with Elijah. He had 4 tests he had to face. The first test was the test of a new place. Once again God commanded Elijah to go to Zarephath, meet a woman and stay in the town. The second test was the test of first impressions. The woman that God told Elijah to meet was a Gentile woman who was widowed. This was a double blow because she was poor and a Gentile. Being a widow she was poor and being a Gentile was a big deal for a Hebrew man. The third test was the test of a hopeless situation. Elijah had to sit and watch the widow prepare dinner for him while her and her son knew they would soon die from starvation. Elijah asked her to have faith that God would provide for them and Elijah. The widow believed. The fourth test was the test of obedient faith. The widow did whatever Elijah asked of her and in return God provided for all of them. It is amazing to sit back and watch Elijah and his strong will and faithfulness. Not only Elijah, but all of the people God placed around him were faithful and did as they were told. Do we always do as God leads us? Or do we do more of what we want to do and ignore the direction of God? Is it easier to disobey God's direction if we feel uncomfortable with his command? As you go this week stop and think about where God is leading you. Are you going? Willingly? Do not be afraid for the Lord will watch over you. Follow His lead and you are sure to be blessed.

Prayer Requests for June 13th

Our lesson this week is still on Elijah and in 1 Kings 17. At this point in the bible, we have been through 7 kings. Each were ungodly in their own ways. Elijah tells Ahab that God will not let it rain until He commands it. Elijah then leaves and goes to a creek where God quenches his thirst and sends ravens to feed him for 3 years. After the three years, Elijah returns to the land. We learned from Elijah's example, as believers when bumps in the road come along, Gos always puts us in a place where he tests us before he blesses us. By taking this approach, God teaches us through our experiences. God builds our character before molding us into who He wants us to be. As believers, alot of time we pray reactively. This means we pray once something happens in our lives. God wants us to also pray proactively meaning during the good times and before things happen in our lives. Are you praying proactively? Are you allowing God to work through you during the trials in your life? Are you walking away from these situations realizing the blessing God has given you? As you go this week, think about the trails in your life and the way they have shaped your character. Thank God for the trials and the chance to learn from your experience. Don't forget to pray and thank Him even when times are good. Be proactive and not just reactive!

Happy Birthday to:

Prayer Requests for June 6th

Our lesson this week is about Elijah God's mountain man. Our scripture is found in 1 Kings 12:26-33. The scripture starts out by talking about all of the kings and their characteristics. Then in chapter 17 verse 1, God tells Ahab that the land will be dry with no rain until God commands it. He then told Elijah to leave and retreat to the woods and he would protect him. The lesson then went on to talk about Spiritual risks. We discussed some of the risks we have in our lives today. Some of the answers from the class were; standing up for our faith and what we believe in; our church addition in a tough economy; then Jason reminded us that God lead our church to the addition so not doing the addition and following God was the spiritual risk; people we associate ourselves with that may affect our spirituality and decisions we make; having children and guiding them on a spiritual path. Elijah was faced with a lot of risks, but knew God would guide him through and by sticking with God the RISK was eliminated. As you go this week think about the risks you face everyday. Does God shine through your risks? Are you taking a spiritual risk or just a risk? Pray that God will be with you in every decision you make whether it be risky or not.

Prayer Requests for May 30th

Our lesson this week is about the Sacrifice of Christian Hedonism. For those of you who may have mixed feelings about John Piper, this is our last Sunday with him. Yeah! Our passage this week is found in 1 Corinthians 15:19 and 4:10-13 and 2 Corinthians 11:23-28. We learn that Paul concerned himself with knowing Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He did not worry about having righteousness of his own but his relationship with the Lord. There are 3 reasons why Paul focused on God. First was obedience. Scripture for obedience is Acts 19:6, Acts 14:22 and Luke 9:23-24. The second was Breaking of Self Reliance. Scripture for that is 2 Corinthians 1:8-9. The third was to Magnify the Glory of Christ. The fourth was to Endure For the Sake of the Gospel. The scripture for this is Galatians 1:24 and Hebrews 10:14. Piper went on to say that Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice and the only thing lacking is the physical presence spreading the gospel. In other words for it to truly be the perfect sacrifice, the people need to learn about it. The only way they will learn is for God's people to go spread the Word. As you go this week, think about your role in the perfect sacrifice. As a Christian, are you spreading the gospel? Are you telling other about the perfect sacrifice? Allow God to work in your life this week and as he does, be sure to share that He is the one in control not you. You never know, it may start a conversation that ends with the perfect sacrifice.

Happy Anniversary:

Josh and Melanie - May 20 (Belated since I did not post last week)
Kim and John - May 21 (Belated since I did not post last week)
Andrew and Rachel - May 31

Pray for safe travels for them and that they will have an apartment once in Oakland. Most of you know that Jon and I have been trying for 2 and a half years to have another baby. We went through infertility but stopped once we found out that insurance would not cover it. We have decided to pray hard about where to go next. We will either go forward with the infertility and pay out of pocket or decide to have a complete family with the three of us. Please pray for us and with us as we try and make this difficult decision.

Loyd and Lisa - Thank you for the words of encouragement Loyd about infertility. We truly appreciate that! Loyd spoke in front of a group of people this week for work. He said it went great! Unspoken.

Prayer Requests for May 23rd

Our lesson this morning is about Marriage and Missions. Our scripture is from Ephesians 5:25 - 30. The scripture tells husbands to love their wife as Christ loved the church. He gave Himself up completely for the church. The scripture also says love your wife as you do your own body. He who loves his wife loves himself. Man shall then leave his mother and father and hold fast to his wife. God does not focus all of the attention on the husbands. He goes on to tell the wives to respect their husbands. The important thing to remember is for the relationship with husband and wife to work, they must both be right in their walk with God. Even in the strongest relationships, the devil can sneak in. Be aware and keep your relationships strong by modeling Ephesians 5:25 - 30. As you go this week, think of your relationship with your spouse. Are you modeling this scripture? If not, what can you do to change that. God has given each of us a person to travel the journey of life with. Make sure you are putting the most into the relationship God has blessed you with.

Prayer Requests for May 9th

This week our lesson was about Prayer as the Pursuit of Our Joy. We started out with John 14:13. Joey posed the question how do our prayers bring glory to God? By speaking to Him, Thanking Him, Bringing glory to God through answered prayers and examples of how He is working in our lives and He likes for us to acknowledge our need for Him, were a few of the answers from the class. John Piper tells us that Prayer is significant to glorify God (Psalms 50:15). John 16:24 says ask and you will receive so your joy will be full. Prayers bring joy in our lives. But what if our prayers are not answered in our eyes? Does that mean we do not receive joy? If we are praying according to scripture, we will receive joy through God's will in our lives. Notice that said God's will and not what we want or expect for our lives. He will give us the desires of our heart which according to scripture should be God centered and not "me" centered. As you go this week, think about the prayers you have had lately with God. Have they brought you joy? Were they answered the way you planned or the way God intended? God has a plan for each one of us and though we may not see it now, our faith tells us that it is the best plan for our lives. Thank God for the plan he has for you even in the peaks and the valleys.
