Prayer Request for July 18th

Our lesson this week comes from 1 Kings 21: 1-29. We were challenged to think about things that we may have waited patiently for but struggled while doing so. We were also challenged to think about situations that are hard to understand. For instance, why does a 16 year old get pregnant when a couple who is married has been trying for years. Or why God allows three year old to get cancer, or 911, or Katrina. Where is God in all of this? Several in the class mentioned that we may not see how God has worked in a tragedy, but it is there. For instance, after 911 church attendance was on a rise as well as people becoming Christians. Although, this was a tragedy and took so many lives, there were thousands of lives saved eternally by their commitment to God. As for the three year old with cancer, the child's family members may not be saved and their purpose on this earth was to bring them closer to God. In our story today, Ahab asks Naboth if he can purchase his land. After Naboth denies him the land he goes on to pout about his loss. Then Jezebel comes to see him and he shares his woes with her. Jezebel decides to plot a scheme to get the land for Ahab. She has Naboth and all of his heirs killed so Ahab can have the land. Ahab goes on to be with Jezebel and live on the land. It appears that Ahab and Jezebel had gotten away with murder. Where is God? Does He not know or care? Why did He not protect Naboth a man of God who was doing what is right? God three years later send Elijah to assure Ahab he too will have his blood licked by dogs. Ahab and Jezebel were both killed and their blood licked by dogs. What we need to take away from this is God is in control. He has an ultimate plan for each of us. Although it is easier said than done, we are to be patient and wait on God. As you go this week ask God to give you patience as you wait for His will. Try and focus your attention on how God is working in your life and not when.

Prayer Request for July 11th

Our lesson this week is about Elisha and Elijah. Our lesson comes from 1 Kings19:19-21. Elisha receives the call from God. After God summoned him, he was happy to go. He also fully committed to God's calling. As Christians we seek God's will everyday. The thing we may not realize is the everyday tasks that become so mundane for us may actually be God's will for our lives. For example, God's will for a student is to study and pass their classes. God's will for a doctor is to take care of his patients by making rounds and so on. God's will for a teacher is to do their lesson plans and come to work prepared to teach. The question you need to ask yourself this week while you are working on the computer, doing laundry, building homes, fighting a case in court and taking care of children is do you truly appreciate and out your all into God's will for you life right now? Or are you so busy seeking God's will that you do not realize your mundane tasks may be His will. Appreciate the everyday things of life and next time you are washing those dishes, thank God for the ability to follow His will.

Prayer Requests for June 20th

Our lesson this week is continuing with Elijah. He had 4 tests he had to face. The first test was the test of a new place. Once again God commanded Elijah to go to Zarephath, meet a woman and stay in the town. The second test was the test of first impressions. The woman that God told Elijah to meet was a Gentile woman who was widowed. This was a double blow because she was poor and a Gentile. Being a widow she was poor and being a Gentile was a big deal for a Hebrew man. The third test was the test of a hopeless situation. Elijah had to sit and watch the widow prepare dinner for him while her and her son knew they would soon die from starvation. Elijah asked her to have faith that God would provide for them and Elijah. The widow believed. The fourth test was the test of obedient faith. The widow did whatever Elijah asked of her and in return God provided for all of them. It is amazing to sit back and watch Elijah and his strong will and faithfulness. Not only Elijah, but all of the people God placed around him were faithful and did as they were told. Do we always do as God leads us? Or do we do more of what we want to do and ignore the direction of God? Is it easier to disobey God's direction if we feel uncomfortable with his command? As you go this week stop and think about where God is leading you. Are you going? Willingly? Do not be afraid for the Lord will watch over you. Follow His lead and you are sure to be blessed.

Prayer Requests for June 13th

Our lesson this week is still on Elijah and in 1 Kings 17. At this point in the bible, we have been through 7 kings. Each were ungodly in their own ways. Elijah tells Ahab that God will not let it rain until He commands it. Elijah then leaves and goes to a creek where God quenches his thirst and sends ravens to feed him for 3 years. After the three years, Elijah returns to the land. We learned from Elijah's example, as believers when bumps in the road come along, Gos always puts us in a place where he tests us before he blesses us. By taking this approach, God teaches us through our experiences. God builds our character before molding us into who He wants us to be. As believers, alot of time we pray reactively. This means we pray once something happens in our lives. God wants us to also pray proactively meaning during the good times and before things happen in our lives. Are you praying proactively? Are you allowing God to work through you during the trials in your life? Are you walking away from these situations realizing the blessing God has given you? As you go this week, think about the trails in your life and the way they have shaped your character. Thank God for the trials and the chance to learn from your experience. Don't forget to pray and thank Him even when times are good. Be proactive and not just reactive!

Happy Birthday to:

Prayer Requests for June 6th

Our lesson this week is about Elijah God's mountain man. Our scripture is found in 1 Kings 12:26-33. The scripture starts out by talking about all of the kings and their characteristics. Then in chapter 17 verse 1, God tells Ahab that the land will be dry with no rain until God commands it. He then told Elijah to leave and retreat to the woods and he would protect him. The lesson then went on to talk about Spiritual risks. We discussed some of the risks we have in our lives today. Some of the answers from the class were; standing up for our faith and what we believe in; our church addition in a tough economy; then Jason reminded us that God lead our church to the addition so not doing the addition and following God was the spiritual risk; people we associate ourselves with that may affect our spirituality and decisions we make; having children and guiding them on a spiritual path. Elijah was faced with a lot of risks, but knew God would guide him through and by sticking with God the RISK was eliminated. As you go this week think about the risks you face everyday. Does God shine through your risks? Are you taking a spiritual risk or just a risk? Pray that God will be with you in every decision you make whether it be risky or not.

Prayer Requests for May 30th

Our lesson this week is about the Sacrifice of Christian Hedonism. For those of you who may have mixed feelings about John Piper, this is our last Sunday with him. Yeah! Our passage this week is found in 1 Corinthians 15:19 and 4:10-13 and 2 Corinthians 11:23-28. We learn that Paul concerned himself with knowing Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He did not worry about having righteousness of his own but his relationship with the Lord. There are 3 reasons why Paul focused on God. First was obedience. Scripture for obedience is Acts 19:6, Acts 14:22 and Luke 9:23-24. The second was Breaking of Self Reliance. Scripture for that is 2 Corinthians 1:8-9. The third was to Magnify the Glory of Christ. The fourth was to Endure For the Sake of the Gospel. The scripture for this is Galatians 1:24 and Hebrews 10:14. Piper went on to say that Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice and the only thing lacking is the physical presence spreading the gospel. In other words for it to truly be the perfect sacrifice, the people need to learn about it. The only way they will learn is for God's people to go spread the Word. As you go this week, think about your role in the perfect sacrifice. As a Christian, are you spreading the gospel? Are you telling other about the perfect sacrifice? Allow God to work in your life this week and as he does, be sure to share that He is the one in control not you. You never know, it may start a conversation that ends with the perfect sacrifice.

Prayer Requests for May 23rd

Our lesson this morning is about Marriage and Missions. Our scripture is from Ephesians 5:25 - 30. The scripture tells husbands to love their wife as Christ loved the church. He gave Himself up completely for the church. The scripture also says love your wife as you do your own body. He who loves his wife loves himself. Man shall then leave his mother and father and hold fast to his wife. God does not focus all of the attention on the husbands. He goes on to tell the wives to respect their husbands. The important thing to remember is for the relationship with husband and wife to work, they must both be right in their walk with God. Even in the strongest relationships, the devil can sneak in. Be aware and keep your relationships strong by modeling Ephesians 5:25 - 30. As you go this week, think of your relationship with your spouse. Are you modeling this scripture? If not, what can you do to change that. God has given each of us a person to travel the journey of life with. Make sure you are putting the most into the relationship God has blessed you with.

Prayer Requests for May 9th

This week our lesson was about Prayer as the Pursuit of Our Joy. We started out with John 14:13. Joey posed the question how do our prayers bring glory to God? By speaking to Him, Thanking Him, Bringing glory to God through answered prayers and examples of how He is working in our lives and He likes for us to acknowledge our need for Him, were a few of the answers from the class. John Piper tells us that Prayer is significant to glorify God (Psalms 50:15). John 16:24 says ask and you will receive so your joy will be full. Prayers bring joy in our lives. But what if our prayers are not answered in our eyes? Does that mean we do not receive joy? If we are praying according to scripture, we will receive joy through God's will in our lives. Notice that said God's will and not what we want or expect for our lives. He will give us the desires of our heart which according to scripture should be God centered and not "me" centered. As you go this week, think about the prayers you have had lately with God. Have they brought you joy? Were they answered the way you planned or the way God intended? God has a plan for each one of us and though we may not see it now, our faith tells us that it is the best plan for our lives. Thank God for the plan he has for you even in the peaks and the valleys.

Easter Egg Hunt/Social 2010

Prayer Requests for April 11th

Our lesson today is again from the Master Works Study guide. We are continuing with John Piper on the journey to figuring out Christian Hedonism. Today;s lesson was focused on the Creation of Christian Hedonism. John Piper poses the question "If your aim is conversion, why not just use the verse Acts 16:31?" He goes on to say that undeniably God;s word says we are created in His image. We are able to celebrate God's glory in an additional way because we have emotions and feelings God has given us to do so. If we do not focus on the joy the scriptures tell us to have, we do not fully rejoice in God. He says that true joy can not be fake. We can fake smiles, politeness, gestures and many other things but if we truly have joy, it can not be fake. We discussed how some of John Piper's ways may be different from how traditional Baptist may teach God's word but his foundation is the Word of God. Stay tuned as we continue this interesting journey with John Piper. As you go this week ask yourself what you experience that is "true joy" in your life. You may realize the "true joy" is not focused on God where it should be. Pray that God would help you focus your joy on Him where it belongs.

Prayer Requests for April 4th - Easter Sunday

Our lesson this week comes from the Masterwork book. John Piper will be leading the study for the next few weeks. This week he chose to focus on Christian Hedonism. There are several key things about Christian Hedonism that Piper points out. First is to establish the sovereignty of God. Scripture he uses to support that is Psalms 115:3; Isaiah 46:9-10; Daniel 4:34-35; Job 42:2. The second thing is biblical basis for God's sovereign happiness. Scripture he uses to support this is Psalm 104:31; Amos 3:6; Acts 2:23. At this point in the lesson, Joey pointed out that this is where it can be difficult for Christians to listen to Piper's views. We are raised to see a merciful and loving God. Piper challenges us by asking is God for us or Himself? The third thing is how is he a God of love? The scripture used for this is 2 Thessalonians 1:10 and Ephesians 4:6. Christians do not like to hear that God exalts Himself and welcomes the praises of men because the bible teaches us not to be boastful or expect these things from each other. What Piper wants us to understand is if God is going to be for us, He has to be for Himself. What could God give us to enjoy that would prove He loves us? Himself. When we are given something we love it, praise it, treasure it and adore it. We praise what we enjoy because the delight of enjoying something is not complete until you praise it. In order for our joy with God to be complete we must praise Him and hold Him worthy of being the one and only Savior. This is what John Piper says is the basis for Christian Hedonism. As you go this week, ask yourself if you are holding God as highly esteemed as He should be. After all, that is what he commands us to do.

Prayer Requests for March 21st

Our lesson this week comes from the book of John Chapter 19 verse 28. Be fore we start with John lets take a look back at Mark 15 verse 22. In this verse, the roman soldiers try to give Jesus wine mixed with myrrh but Jesus refuses. He goes on to say that he is to fulfill prophecy and does not want anything to deter from that. In John, the scripture tells us that "after this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished and the Scripture was fulfilled, He said I Am Thirsty!" It was only when Jesus knew that everything was completed as foretold in the prophecy that He accepted the drink of wine so no one could counter its completion. Jesus was determined for Christians to have His word to use as a tool in their daily walk. in verse 33 we learned that the soldiers did not break Jesus legs because they knew he was already dead. One of the soldiers then pierced His side and at once blood and water began to flow. Here the blood represents the sacrifice that Jesus made and the water represents our seeking of His forgiveness. The blood and water go hand in hand. Through the blood, He died and saved us from our sins. Through the water, it is our responsibility to nourish that relationship and help it mature through our Christian walk. As you go this week, think of the ultimate sacrifice God made for you. Then think of the sacrifice you are making in return. Are you doing your part to nourish this treasured relationship that was given to you?

Prayer Requests for March 14th

Our lesson this week is about different symbols in scripture. The first symbol comes from John 19:19-20. In these verses we learn that Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF JEWS". The question is what does this symbol mean. We had several interpretations. One view is that Pilate finally realized after his discussions with Jesus that he truly was the King of the Jews and posted it as a sign of his understanding. Another view, from the Jews stand point, is that if they were to cross the Romans they would lose their life. You can also look at the sign as a warning not to cross the Romans. Ultimately, the sign is a symbol of God reaching out to communicate with us. God wants to and can reach out to us through many different signs and languages. In Luke 23:32-43 we see our second symbol. In these verses it talks about the three crosses and Jesus speaking to the criminals. The crosses symbolize our choice. Jesus is in the middle and we can choose to do the right thing like one of the criminals or rebuke Him like the other. One of the criminals chose to believe in God while the other did not. Craig shared that it is amazing that while Jesus was dying on the cross he took focus off himself and chose to save the soul of what appeared to be a worthless criminal. Jennifer also added that the criminal show we do not have to work for God's love and forgiveness. The criminal did everything wrong and led a very sinful life but Jesus took time to save his soul because he loved and valued him. Our last symbol comes from John 19:23&24. It is the symbol of the garment. Instead of ripping it to shreds, the guards saw it as valuable and wagered for the garment in its entirety. That shows that instead of Jesus picking and choosing who he loves and wishes to grant salvation, he will give it to us as a whole. All we have to do is call upon his name and he will answer. As you go this week and prepare for Easter, think of the wonderful sacrifices that our Lord has made for not me, not you, but each of us equally. Thank God for sending His Son to die on the cross for us and our many sins.

Prayer Requests for March 7th

Our lesson today comes from Matthew. To set the scene, this is Matthew's version of the story of Jesus and his crucifixion. In Matthew 27:27-31 we learn the soldiers have taken Jesus captive, stripped him of his clothes and dressed him in a scarlet robe. They twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on his head. They knelt before him and began to mock him. After mocking him they spit on him. Many of the things that the soldiers did to Jesus were by command, but the choice to spit on him was there own. This represents the sinful nature of man. It is not that we incapable of doing good, it is just that we can not keep from sin. Sins of all mankind whether past, present or future were put on Christ as the crown of thorns. As you go throughout your week think of the thorns you are placing on Jesus' head. Strive to do good and be aware of the sin in your life.

Prayer Requests for February 28th

Our lesson today comes from Daniel Chapter 5. In the beginning of the chapter, King Belshazzar has a feast for all of his companions and friends. Under the influence of wine, Belshazzar orders that the gold and silver vessels from the temple be brought to him. He and his guests drank from them and praised their gods. At that moment a hand appeared and began to write on the wall. As the king watched he became pale and scared. The king asked for his mediums to interpret the writing, but one of his guest said he should ask for Daniel. The king offered presents to Daniel to interpret the writing. Daniel told him to keep his gifts and he would interpret the writing for him. After Daniel interpreted the dream, the king ordered he be draped with gifts. That night the king was killed and Darius of Mede received the throne.
