Prayer Requests for February 28th

Our lesson today comes from Daniel Chapter 5. In the beginning of the chapter, King Belshazzar has a feast for all of his companions and friends. Under the influence of wine, Belshazzar orders that the gold and silver vessels from the temple be brought to him. He and his guests drank from them and praised their gods. At that moment a hand appeared and began to write on the wall. As the king watched he became pale and scared. The king asked for his mediums to interpret the writing, but one of his guest said he should ask for Daniel. The king offered presents to Daniel to interpret the writing. Daniel told him to keep his gifts and he would interpret the writing for him. After Daniel interpreted the dream, the king ordered he be draped with gifts. That night the king was killed and Darius of Mede received the throne.

Prayer Requests for February 14th

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

Our lesson today, in honor of Valentine's Day, was found from the book Song of Solomon. It is the story of Solomon and Shulammite. Solomon had 140 concubines, but was attracted to Shulammite the most. His deepest connection fell with her. The Song of Solomon chapters 1, 2, 4, and 7 are the love letters between Solomon and Shulammite. They start during their courtship and continue through the consummation of their marriage and end with the deepening of their relationship after years together. It is truly touching to see how not only during courtship, but after years of marriage their love is still very strong. Valentine's Day is one day a year that we set aside to show the significant others in our lives how much they mean to us. In reality, we should be showing this love and respect all year long and not just on this one day. In Ephesians 5:28, the bible tells us,"In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself." In this verse, God is telling the men they must first elevate their wives in their union and everything else will fall into place. In 1 Corinthians 7:3&4 the bible tells us, "The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife." In this verse God is telling the women to respect their roles in their marriage and treat them with the up most respect. As you go this week and throughout the rest of the year, celebrate your spouse and the love you share. Remember not to take them for granted, but to appreciate their ability to uphold God's command for a wife or husband in marriage.

Happy Anniversary:

Joey and Kelly - February 21st

Prayer Requests for February 7, 2010

Our lesson today comes from Daniel chapter 4. In this chapter, Nebuchadnezzar has a dream about a tall tree standing in the middle of the earth. Suddenly an observer (holy one) came and cut down the tree chopping of its branches and stripping off its leaves. All that was left was the stump. The king asked Daniel to interpret the dream. Daniel explained that the tree was Nebuchadnezzar b/c he had become great and strong. His greatness had grown high to the sky and extended to the ends of the earth. The holy one coming down to cut the tree to its stump, is the sentence placed on you by the Majesty Most High. You will be driven away from the people and forced to live with the wild animals. As for the command to leave the stump, your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules. Therefore separate yourself from your sins by doing what is right and show mercy to the needy. The chapter goes on to say that the king was perched high on his palace gloating about the wonderful city of Babylon that he built with his power and majestic glory. It was at this time, 12 months past the dream, that God laid down his sentence and Nebuchadnezzar was forced into the wild with the animals. It was only at this point that Nebuchadnezzar looked up to heaven and his sanity returned to him. He praised the Most High and honored and glorified Him who lives forever. James 4:6 says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." What is pride? Where does it cross the line? It is okay to be proud of things you have accomplished with the help of GOD through the talents he has given you. It is when you loose that dependency on God, that it turns to negative pride. Don't be proud of being humble. True humility come form God and is not proud. Pride becomes negative when it slips away from GOD and switches the focus to you and your accomplishments. As you got his week, make sure that your pride is based on God and what he has given you and not on yourself.

Prayer Requests for January 31st

Our lesson this week comes from Daniel 3. Nebuchadnezzar decides to build a 90 foot golden statue. One of the amazing things about this is Daniel had just interpreted the kings dream and he still felt compelled to build this statue. Just a few verses earlier, Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed Daniel's God as the God to worship. Now he has built the statue and expects all of the people to worship it. He would sound a horn and that was the cue for everyone to bow down to his statue. Astrologists approached the king and informed him that Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego do not serve or worship his statue. Furious, Nebuchadnezar sends for the three men and asked them to bow down to his statue. After refusing to bow down and worship his god, Nebuchadnezzar orders them to be thrown in the fire and that it be turned up and warmer than ever. The three told the king that their GOD would save them from the fire and even if he did not, he would be glorified through them and they will not serve his god. As you know, the three were thrown in the fire and after watching and seeing them survive, the king ordered them to be removed and they were untouched.

Prayer Requests for January 24th

Our lesson today is from Daniel Chapter 2. We learned about King Nebuchadnezzar having a dream and not understanding what it meant. He summoned all of the diviner-priests, mediums and sorcerers and asked them to interpret his dream. The catch was he did not tell him the dream. They were to come to him and tell him the dream and interpretation without any knowledge of his experience. If they were unable to do so, he would put them to death. The king's commander went out searching for Daniel and his friends and told them what the king wanted. Daniel confused asked why the king wanted them dead and the commander told him what happened at the palace. Daniel then approached his friends and said we have to figure out what the king dreamed and interpret it to save our lives. That night, the Lord revealed the dream to Daniel in a vision. When he awoke the next morning he told his friends that he knew what the king had dreamed. Daniel then went to the commander and told him not to kill anyone because he knew the dream. He asked to be taken to the king so he could give him the interpretation.

Prayer Requests for January 17th

Our lessons this week comes from the book of Daniel Chapter 1. Daniel and three others were to be trained for three years to be able to serve in the king's court. He required them to be young, healthy and good looking. Daniel wanted to eat different food than what the king was offering. He asked the official to allow him and the others to eat vegetables and drink water. He told the official to examine his diet and the others who were eating the kings food and see which were better fit for the job. At the end of 10 days Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah proved to look healthier. At the end of their training the king asked to review all of the men and none were as good as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. He granted them permission to serve in his court and found them to be better than any others who may have served.

Prayer Requests for January 10th

Our lesson today comes from Ruth chapter 4. Austin Klein is a self proclaimed atheist. He believes that it is our personal responsibility to make our own moral decisions without the help of a "god". It is up to us to make our own rules and regulations. We are to define our own moral code. Some examples of people who did this are Warren Jeffs the polygamist from Utah; Timothy McVeigh the man who bombed the building in Oklahoma and Hitler who was responsible for the death of many Jews. Boaz, who learn about in the book of Ruth has different beliefs than Mr. Klein. Boaz was an older man and well to do within his community. He was known for his character and strong faith in GOD. He was an extremely hard worker. He had the opportunity to give into temptation with Ruth, but chose to marry her in respect to both of their characters. Boaz approached the elder ahead of him in the lineage to inherit Ruth and Naomi. He asked him if he wanted to purchase the land left by their brother Elimelich. The elder agreed to buy the land thinking of himself and what he could gain from it. Boaz reminded him that if he did purchase the land that Ruth and her mother-in-law would come with it. After very little consideration, the elder chose not to purchase the land and Boaz proceeded to marry Ruth. Ruth then was able to conceive and gave birth to a son. From Boaz and Ruth a great lineage was started that eventually led to the birth of Jesus Christ. As you go this week think about Boaz and the legacy he left with his life. Look at Boaz as a person who affected the world in an amazing way. We too have the ability to touch the world and compete against the Austin Klein's of the world. Husbands, hold your wife to high esteem like Boaz did to Ruth. Sometimes we do not realize the plans God has for us because we down play the resources he has given us. Put yourself out there and let GOD work through you and the talents he has blessed you with.

Happy Birthday:

Prayer Requests for January 3rd

Our lesson today comes from Ruth 3:1-18. In today's lesson we learn about Naomi's plan to get Ruth noticed by Boaz. Boaz was a well to do farmer with a lot of integrity in the community. Ruth had noble character and had experienced a lot of loss in her life. Naomi knew that Boaz could provide for her and give her a good life. Naomi told Ruth to go to Boaz and wait til he lie down. She was to go uncover his feet and He agreed to speak with the kinsman who was in line to marry Ruth and see if he would let Boaz marry her. The kinsman agreed and Boaz and Ruth were free to begin their relationship. The take away we get from this lesson is it is okay to be who you are. God created man and woman to be different and that is what makes a relationship so amazing. As you go this week try and embrace the differences that you and your spouse possess. Remember after all that is probably what attracted you to them in the first place.

Prayer Requests for December 20th

Our lesson today was based in Ruth Chapter 1 verses 2 - 21. Today we learned about Naomi and how she dealt with struggles in her life. Naomi was married to Elimelech and they had two sons. They left Bethlehem and traveled to Moab with their sons and Ruth. Not long after they reached Moab, Elimelech died. Less than two years after loosing her husband, Naomi lost both of her sons. She began to become bitter toward God and decided to return to Bethlehem. After all of the struggles Naomi went through, God continued to bless her by giving her a family that helped start the lineage in the bible. If we stand strong in the fact that God has a plan for us and do not let life's struggles sneak up on us, we can stay away from the bitterness that Naomi experienced. Pray for our class as we have a lot of couples dealing with struggles in their lives. During this week of celebration for our Savior, do not forget to take time and thank God for the blessings he gives us and not focus on the struggles we may be facing. And remember STAY STRONG!

Prayer Requests for December 13th

Craig filled in for Joey today and talked about something we are all more than familiar with today. Unfortunately that is adultery, divorce and marriage. Due to the media attention with Tiger Woods, this is a topic that is fresh on our minds. Below are the verses he used to explain the bibles thoughts on adultery and divorce in marriage.

(1 Corinthians 7: 1-7)
1Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry.[a] 2But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. 5Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

(Matthew 5: 27-30)
27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'[a] 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

(Proverbs 6:25)
25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes,
26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread,
and the adulteress preys upon your very life.

(Matthew 19:6-10)
6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." 7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?" 8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." 10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."

(1 Corinthians 6:18)
18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

Prayer Requests for December 6th

Today we learned about 2 examples of strong mothers, Jochbed (Moses' mother) and the women exiled to Siberia by Stalin. After being exiled to Siberia with their children, the women came together and formed a community in order to protect their children and sustain some type of life for them. We learn about Jochbed in Exodus 2:1-4. She was 130 years old when she had Moses. He was only 3 months old when she placed him in the river and watched him drift away in order to protect him. Jochbed was a strong woman and outlived all of her children. She was one of the few who left Egypt and made it to Canaan. As a strong mother, from the moment that God blesses you with a child, you have to begin to let them go. Through all their steps to adulthood, you raise them to be godly children and begin to let them make their own decisions and go into the world armed with God's word and wisdom. Pray that God will reveal to us his plans for our children so we can mold and shape them to fulfill His plan. Trust in God to use them in ways we may not understand to direct them on the right path.

Happy Birthday Doug! December 9th

Prayer Requests:

Amanda and Brandon received an early Christmas present this past Thursday. Mary Charles finally came into the world. After a rough delivery, please pray for strength for Amanda and that Mary Charles will sleep well and stay healthy. Congratulations!

Chanel and James went on Monday to see the doctor and Chanel said that Sarah’s check-up went well. The doctor said that he does think that Sarah has some vision in her right eye. They will bring her back in 3 months for a fitting for glasses. This was encouraging because if the doctor didn’t have hope, he wouldn’t worry with glasses. They said their goal is for her to have vision enough to walk around on her own without any aide. They still say she won’t be able to read without braille or drive a car but walking around on her own will be a huge victory for them!! They will also do another surgery when they go back in 3 months as well to work on the left (bad) eye. I am not sure what they will do in this surgery. All in all, Jamie and Chanel were encouraged.

Doug's aunt passed away this past week. This is the one he asked us to pray for. She had an accident and in surgery they found cancer. Please pray for Doug and his family while dealing with this loss.

Joey and Kelly - David Higginbotham finished his 3rd cycle of chemo and has one left the week of Christmas. Pray for continued health and quick recovery from chemo. Jonathan is traveling back from Nashville. Pray for safe travels.

Scotty and Lesley - Reese has been under the weather. Pray for good health. Scotty's mom goes to PA this week for more treatments for cancer. Pray for healing and quick recovery.

Brad and Ashley - Brad has some leads for job opportunities. Pray the Lord will lead him in the right direction and that he can find a job soon. A little girl named EB from Troy has a brain tumor. Pray for their family. Marla and Troy are the parents and their last name is Johnson. She is only 3 years old. Ashley's brother and wife are expecting and newly weds. They are having a hard time. Pray for Danielle and Wesley.

Rebecca - Jason was home with Bailey. Rebecca's dad is still looking for a job. Pray he can find one quickly.

Jon and Amber - Praise! Jon's boss is being relocated to S. Carolina. Pray the new boss will be easier to work with and steer the company in the right direction. Please pray for my grandfather. He is waiting to have a PET scan, but he and my grandmother have decided he is not going to have any radiation or chemo no matter the results. He has had an amazing life and is one of the strongest Christians I know, but it is hard to hear this.

Kerri - Trent was home under the weather with Hugh. Kerri's dad's lungs are not healing as quickly as they thought and he may have to be on oxygen for a long time. Pray he will heal and hopefully not depend on the oxygen. Hugh's father is having surgery after first of year for prostate cancer.

Veronica and Jaime - Reagan goes to ENT tomorrow and may have to get tubes in her ears. PRAISE! Veronica is home from Auburn and through with classes. She will star her clinicals soon. Welcome back!

Heather and Tyler - Tyler's mom had knee replacement surgery last week. Pray for healing and a quick recovery. Tyler has finals this week and only 4 days left of school before he starts clinicals.

Brian and Carrie - Go for ultrasound Tuesday to find out what they are having.

Colt and Katy - Katy's last class is Thursday and she graduates on Saturday! Congrats!!!!

Prayer Requests for November 29th

Our lesson today was in 1 Kings chapters 16-19. We learned about Ahab, Elijah and Jezebel. 1 Kings chapter 16:30-34 set the stage for Ahab. The bible says that he did more evil than anyone before him. If that was not enough, he chose Jezebel as his wife and began to worship her idol Baal. In 1 Kings 17:1-24, Elijah declares famine on Ahab's land. The Lord told Elijah to leave and stay in the wilderness. After the rivers dried up he sent him to a widow that took care of him. In 1 Kings 18 God tells Elijah it is time to go present himself to Ahab. Elijah called for Ahab to come to Mount Carmel. They met there and Elijah told him to get a scarifice. They would both set up for the offering to burn without lighting a fire. Elijah said for them to call out to Baal to light their fire and Elijah would call out to God. Baal did not respond, but God started the fire for Elijah's offering. Elijah told Ahab there would be rain and after the storm, Ahab got on his chariot and headed to see Jezebel and confront her about her idol Baal. Elijah was excited to see this take place so he tucked his robe and ran infront of the chariot to Jezreel. In 1 Kings 19: 1-9 upon his arrival, Ahab tells Jezebel what Elijah had done and she threatens him. Elijah became afraid and immediately ran for his life. The Lord called out to him in disappointment and told him to eat and gain strength and travel on. Joey made a comparison of this story to the Boston Marathon. The last several miles consist of steep hills and difficult terrain. As a runner, you prepare for the last leg of the race so you are able to power through. No matter where we are in life, there are ups and downs and we know the downs are coming. If we call out to God who gives us strength and prepares us like runners for a marathon, we can pull through the last leg of the race. After all it is how we handle the tough hills of life that speaks to others about our faith and character. How do you respond? Are you prepared for the last leg of the race or are you running with fear?

Reminder:

December 5th - This Saturday at 6:30pm will be our Christmas party at Joey and Kelly's house. Bring your White Elephant gift and yourself. Hope to see you there!! By the way, I have to throw in a ROLLLLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Prayer Requests for November 22nd

Our Lesson today was about effective prayer. We discussed 2 Godly men who prayed and influenced God's actions. The first was Abraham. In Genesis 18: 16 - 33 we learned about Abraham and his nephew Lot and their journey in the wilderness. They realized they had several people traveling with them and decided to split. Abraham told Lot he could choose which way he went and Abraham would go the opposite way. Being a little selfish, Lot chose the land he thought was more fertile. We later learned that this is where Sodom and Gomorrah were located. God told Abraham that he was going to destroy the land for all of the wicked it was producing. Abraham realized that meant he would destroy Lot. Abraham began to bargain with God and ask him to save Lot b/c he was the good in the evil land. God destroyed the land and spared Lot and his two daughters. By Abraham praying for them, they were saved from God's destruction. The second was Moses. In Numbers 14:2-22 we learned Moses' story. All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron. They told them they wished they had died in Egypt or the wilderness instead of the Lord bringing them to die by the sword. They decided to appoint a leader and go back to Egypt. Moses and Aaron pleaded with them to stay and said that God would bring them to a land flowing with milk and honey. Moses prayed to God and asked him to spare the people. He told God that the people will think that since He could not bring them to the land he promised, He just slaughtered them. God granted Moses the request of sparing their lives but told him they would never inherit the land he promised. Through the examples of both of these men we see how staying faithful in prayer can lead to effective prayers. Remember, sometimes the answer to our prayers may not be our answer but God always has a plan and who knows it may be greater than what we ever imagined!

****Don't forget this week to take time and thank God for all the blessings in your life. After all Thanksgiving is to reflect on the things we are thankful for!!!

Happy Birthday:

Prayer Requests For November 15th

This week we had John DeShazo teaching because Joey was helping with the ground breaking ceremony. We learned about why Jesus came to earth as a man. The first question was "What is the role of a mediator?" The class answered that it is someone who leads two parties to an agreement without being emotionally involved. Our first passage was 1 Timothy 2:5-6. From this passage we learned that Jesus intercedes on our behalf. Jesus is the way we reach God. To try and live life without sin is to try and live a life pleasing to God. Our second passage was Phillipians 2:5-9. In this passage we learned that Jesus volunteered to come to earth as man so he could die for our sins. For other passages of reference look at Hebrews 2:14, 2 Corinthians 5:21 and 2 Corinthians 5:17 . We can earn righteousness from God through Jesus. Three take aways from the experience on the cross: 1. Depth of man's sin; 2. Love of God. He was able to sacrifice his own son for imperfect people, 3. Salvation. The only way to have salvation is through Jesus who died on the cross. Thank you John for a great lesson!
